Has your student been diagnosed with a Learning Difference?
What is Dyslexia? “Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.” Adopted by the IDA Board of Directors, Nov. 12, 2002.
How can we help? Our team of academic therapists uses comprehensive, evidence-based, multisensory methods such as Orton Gillingham to teach phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
What is Dysgraphia? Dysgraphia is a learning disorder of writing ability at any stage that includes problems with letter formation, grammar, letter spacing, spelling, writing rate, fine motor coordination, and composition.
How can we help? Our team believes in teaching students the correct letter formation and cursive to students. Research suggests handwriting versus keyboarding helps in learning new information. Students are more likely to remember what they write down than if they type the same information. The International Dyslexia Association supports teaching cursive to diverse learners. We also believe in partnering with assisted technology to teach students how to use accommodations such as speech-to-text.
What is Dyscalculia? Dyscalculia is a deficit in fundamental number representation and processing. Dyscalculia can impact estimating, calculation skills, mental math, remembering steps in a sequence, reading graphs or charts, remembering dates and deadlines, telling time, and counting change.
How can we help? Our academic therapists use multisensory math techniques, including sight, touch, hearing, and movement, to give kids different ways to learn skills and understand concepts.
